Journaling (and Other Dangerous Pursuits!)

Author Samara O'Shea in front of JournalTalk logoMy guest this week, Samara O’Shea, is author of three wonderful gems. Each of them highlights a slice of what makes journal-writing such a rich exploration of our hearts.

We discuss each of them, and the unique stories and choices Samara has made, from her online business of writing love letters for people, to her decision to become a psychotherapist. Samara shares about her role models, recalls some lessons about unrequited love, and gives us permission to appreciate our soul’s yearnings. Plus, we both offer up some unique journaling exercises about our attractions (maybe obsessions?) for other people!

Samara reminds us that the honest and vulnerable tales we carry within us makes journaling both a dangerous and tender journey.

SPECIAL OFFER exclusively for JournalTalk listeners: The first TWO people who contact Samara by email (please say you heard her on JournalTalk) will receive ALL THREE of these books for one steeply discounted price of just $25.00.  (JournalTalk, Episode #38, September 2, 2014)

Writing for Health & Wellness

JT_JohnEvansReturning to JournalTalk is Dr. John Evans, founder of Wellness and Writing Connections. Back in Episode #15, Dr. Evans shared about his connection to the rewriting of the landmark research compendium, Writing To Heal, by Dr. James Pennebaker. In this episode, Dr. Evans shares an update on that work (including its new title, Expressive Writing For Health) as well as some heart-stirring examples of the kind of work that he does. Don’t miss this: Dr. Evans reads some writings from one workshop participant (shared with the author’s permission, of course). Very moving!

In addition to this interview, I am pleased to introduce to you Albert Diaz Cruz, a journaling workshop aficionado, who will be sharing book reviews from journaling experts with us from time to time. His first book review is on The New Diary by Tristine Rainer. Please leave a comment below to enter the drawing for a copy of this book mailed to you for free!  (JournalTalk, Episode #24, February 6, 2014)

Episode #4: Journaling via Spreadsheet

Journaling via Spreadsheet

Kathy LynchMy taxes are done!  And I’m another year older.  This episode was recorded after a celebratory dinner, prepared by my accountant friend Kathy Lynch, along with a glass (or two) of wine.

Kathy is the only person I know who has maintained her journal for years inside of an Excel Spreadsheet!  And could she possibly write in her journal while driving in her car?  Not sure about that one!  I met Kathy in Landmark Education’s “Wisdom Unlimited” self-empowerment course, the very place where Journal Talk and Write4Life got their start.  I invited her to participate in my journaling course last year, and she has stuck with them, month after month, ever since.  And now, she is the one inspiring me with new methods and resources on journaling.  She introduced me to Dr. James Pennebaker’s work, Writing To Heal, a well-researched book that recommends an effective journaling technique for overcoming trauma, based on scientific study and evidence.

You’ll hear that Kathy and I enjoy a good laugh, while jumping topics from the surreal to the profound.  We enjoy sharing new ideas and insights, always keeping our spirits refreshed and our minds positive.  (JournalTalk, Episode #4, April 15, 2013)
